| From the Commander:
We've had a busy summer at the post. With the bicentennial, picnic and
9-11 remembrance ceremony everyone has been working hard. I appreciate
all the help and cooperation that has been given during all of the
events that were held over the summer.
Post #79 made out pretty good at the Department of New York Convention held in Albany during July. We were awarded a framed certificate for category 5 membership with an all-time high paid membership of 779. We had 107 new members for the 2002 year. Congratulations to everyone for a job well-done. Thank you. The 2003 membership cards are in and available at the bar. You can either send in the renewal sent to you by national or stop in and pay the bartender. We are already half way to our goal of 650 paid members. The membership board that is located in the bar area is in the process of being redone. I've had some complaints about missing names, etc. . So to correct the problem we have printed out a roster of paid members for 2002 and their names will be placed on the board soon. You have to understand that the board is time consuming because of transfers in and out, deaths, new members, etc., and one person has a hard time keeping it up. If you would like to volunteer to help out, let me know. We had the privilege of spearheading the 9-11 remembrance ceremonies that were held in Veterans Memorial Park. I've had nothing but compliments regarding the program and everyone that participated. This is supposed to be an annual event and I hope that it is kept up every year. I've been asked why I am wearing a white Legion cap now. The answer is that I was appointed as one of the Department of New York Sgt-at-Arms for the 2002 - 2003 year. It was an award given to me as St. Lawrence County Commander for reaching 100%. It was also the first time in about 10 years St. Lawrence County reached that goal, so you can understand why I am so proud of it. Bingo Worker Appreciation dinner is coming up on October 4th. Earl Leatherland and Tom MaComber are planning it. As soon as they given out any information it will be posted. Early Bird Dinner is November 16th. Joe Charland and myself are in charge of it. There will be a sign-up sheet posted after the 1st of October at the bar. MEALS ON WHEELS will be having a radio-thon on October 10th from 9:30am - 5:30pm. We have been asked to man the phones at the Meals on Wheels building during those times. Anyone that is able to help can please either contact me or sign-up at the bar. This is a community necessity organization that delivers meals to the elderly, disabled and shut-ins. They are in financially poor shape to the extend that we may loss this valuable service. Some members volunteer to deliver these meals and know that they are needed. A few of you count on these meals. PLEASE, if you are all able to help with this project do so, sign-up or call me. Our bench that we donated to the John Story Trail a few years ago is finally up. If you would like to see it, you can find it at the corner by the ball field at the High School. The siding that was proposed in May or June has been installed over
the existing brick on the old section of the post. We left the brick
exposed on the front porch. Recently Joe Charland, Don Charland and
blister fingers Virginia Charland built an extended entrance for the
side porch to enable easier access. They did a beautiful job. Anyone
that is electrically inclined can install an outside light at that area.
See me or Joe Charland if you would like to do it. |

Sons of The American Legion: First of all, I would like
to say I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable summer. We have a total
of 14 new members for 2003. The newest members are Glenn Adams, William
Ash, Christopher Charland, Jason Chilton, Robert Chilton, John Dobbins,
Jim Mitchell, Frank Joy Sr., and Denny Ryan. The Sons of The Legion
welcome you all. The 2003 membership cards are in, remember if you pay your dues early you will be eligible for the Early Bird dinner in November. The dues are still $10.00. Please drop your dues off at the Post or mail them to Dick Loffler or myself. SAL State Commander John Bogart would like every member in NYS to try and sign up one new member this year to reach a goal of being the largest SAL in the country. He is also offering a special award for the member who signs the most members for the year. So get out there and start recruiting!! On a unhappy note - over the summer we lost one of our first active members - Robert "Bob Mereau - an 11 year member. He will be sorely missed. We had our TV/VCR drawing at our September 9th meeting. A special thank you goes out to the members of the Massena Athletic Association (MAA) for their generous donation of the TV/VCR combo. The winner was John Kelly, oh boy was he surprised! Thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket for the drawing. Last, but not least, we need volunteers for the upcoming dinners and BINGO. For more information call the Legion or myself. The next County meeting will be October 12th at Massena Post #79 at 12 noon. The next Squadron meeting is October 14th @ 7:00pm - all are welcome. Thank You; Quotes: After the 1st Remembrance Day Ceremonies for September 11th, 2001 I want to leave you with two quotes from our founding fathers: " If we desire peace, one of the most powerful institutions of our rising prosperity, it must be known that we are at all times ready for war." George Washington "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." Thomas
