I appointed Clarence Marlow Jr. as my Adjutant.  The two open positions on the House Committee were filled by Rod Charleston and Bob Cowles.

At the Past Commanders/Past Presidents Dinner, I had the pleasure of presenting Verne Drew with the 2002 Legionnaire of the Year Award for Post #79. This was a well-deserved award for Verne. He does a great deal with the veterans at the nursing homes. He gives freely of his time with them and can always be counted on to help out. After 45 years in the legion you would think he would slow down, but not Verne. Congratulations to you Verne.

The State Convention is almost upon us. Paul "Gib" Mitras from Waddington will step down as Department Commander and I get relieved as County Commander. At the convention we should receive some awards for membership. We have 109 new members and 781 paid members to date. That’s an all time high for this post. We are the second largest post in the 4th district and have helped the 4th district stay in 1st place in the membership race. The last I looked the 4th district needed only 89 to reach 100% themselves. St. Lawrence County is also 100% for the first time in about 10 years. A great deal of this is due to the commitment of our members. I can’t thank you enough.

Events coming up: July 4th there will be the 2nd annual Chicken BBQ here at the Post. July 13th will be the Bicentennial Parade starting at Madison School and ending at the Arena at Harte Haven Shopping Center. July 27th will be the Post Picnic here at the Post.

Bicentennial Button Sale will take place from 9am - 5pm at Rite-Aide here in Massena. Members of the Post, Auxiliary and Sons are urged to sign-up for a hour slot to sell these buttons. There is a sign-up sheet at the bar. Please help us out.

The Proud Father: Left to Right Joseph M. Charland, 2nd Lt. Gary W. Charland Jr., Master Chief Gary J. Charland.

Gary W. Charland was commissioned to 2nd Lt. On May 10th, 2002. He is the grandson of our own 1st Vice Commander Joseph Charland. The picture above is of three generations of the Charland family. A lot of dedication and hard work was put into this. I know Joe is very proud of him and has every right to be. Congratulations Lt. Charland!!

The Auxiliary’s next meeting will be Monday June 3rd at 7pm. Installation of officers will be held. Plan on attending.

At this time, I would like to say that over the last 5 years I have enjoyed, learned and appreciated the true meaning of The American Legion, the Auxiliary and Sons of The Legion. Some people do not realize how vital our organizations are to the future of this country.

To Commander Mark and members, Commander Dick and members, the membership of the Auxiliary, my husband Peter - my heartfelt thanks for your support during my years as President.

God Bless America!
Linda

Sons of The Legion:
I would like to welcome new members to Squadron #79: William Ash, John Dobbins, Donald MacPherson, Eric McDonald and Ron Hoerner. Ron’s name was left out of last month’s newsletter. Sorry about that Ron. Welcome to Squadron #79.

I would like to THANK Commander Mark Phillips and Auxiliary President Linda Firnstein for all their help they gave to our Squadron this past year.

We had a banner year this past year. We have 39 new members for 2002. We received awards for Americanism, Membership and Veterans Rehabilitation at the Convention in July. We are the 6th largest Squadron at 275 members our of 324 Squadrons in the State.

As I step down as Commander, I am very proud to have served as Commander of this great Squadron, for the past 4 ½ years. We have had some very trying times, but we always bounced back and became stronger. I will always remember these past years as the best. Having the support of this Squadron, the Legion members and the Auxiliary members. Commander Mark Phillips and Auxiliary President Linda Firnstein have never refused to help us any time I asked them. They would always go out of their way to help us any way they could.

A special THANKS to our advisors, Earl Leatherland and Tom MaComber. They have always been there to advise, and help us in any way they could. They have attended our monthly meetings, Mid-Winter and Convention meetings to see how they can help us more, or what our needs are. Again Tom and Earl THANK YOU.

I also want to THANK all the Squadron members, for your help with the dinners, wedding receptions, banquets, Post functions, Casino Nights and Lottery. Without you we could not have achieved these awards.

New Officers for 2002 - 2003:
-
Commander: Scott Bolia
- 1st Vice: Mike Bolia
-
2nd Vice: Terry Peets
- Adjutant: Dick Loffler
- Chaplain: Ed Crawford
- Sgt-at-Arms: Ed Crawford

Our next meeting is June 10th at 7pm. We will have some snacks after the meeting. We do not meet in July and August.

The next 4th District meeting is June 8th in Lake Placid, NY at 1pm. I am running for 4th District Commander.

The Convention is July 18 - 20th, 2002 in Albany, NY.

The next County meeting is September 7th at Waddington Squadron #420.

In closing I could go on and on about all the achievements of this Squadron, but the list is endless. Just continue to support and help all the veterans, and the Squadron will continue to grow. Again THANKS TO ALL, for your support.

Past Commander,
Dick Loffler

To Dick and Linda: Now that you are retiring from office I want to take the opportunity to tell you that you have done an outstanding job not only for the Legion, Sons and Auxiliary, but also the veterans of our community. Thank You for all you have done and I hope that you will continue to stay involved. You have earned a debt of gratitude from all of us and it is well deserved. I could not have asked for better counterparts to work with.

Yours for The Legion,
Mark S. Phillips
Commander
